Rough Draft of the narrative building

Load the Epic Games Launcher to start the Unreal Engine launcher.

20190107_183603.jpg

I selected the project with starter content and maximum quality for Desktop/console settings.

20190107_185155.jpg

I selected the third person view and erased everything in the template. I inserted a cube to build the foundations of a basic room.

20190107_185255.jpg

Editing the third person camera view by changing the X & Y coordinates in viewport.

20190107_191341.jpg

I then used the starter pack to make aesthetic changes to my room by grabbing and playing with starter content materials.

Then I wanted to add my videoclip, used in the Unit 6 project for projection mapping to play on the walls on the VR environment. Adding the video clip to VR scene is a bit tricky but one gets eventually.

I had to make video asset and the put that on the plank used for static mesh. Then using the level blueprint the video is played. I also added a variable of data type with media player reference and gave a detail value of media file (video clip).

Secondly, I added the begin play and media player with open-source nod and connected all.

Rough Draft

As per my phase 2 discussions.

20171218_130211.jpg

I used the above picture and opened it with Pixelmator Pro to make a layer PSD file for subject (butterfly) and background flowers and leaves.

20190108_051301.jpg

Then i imported the PSD layered file and opened on Adobe After Effect.

20190108_051317.jpg

Used 3D custom view to adjust the level of depth.

20190108_052645.jpg

I used Final Cut Pro to edit the fog scene to be incorporated in my parallax file.

20190108_063532.jpg

Used keyframes to edit the starting and ending transitional setting for the subject and background.

Parallax Effect

Parallax effect involves a background moving at a slower rate than the foreground. This creates an illusion of depth to the page, giving the content a 3D effect as viewers scroll down.

The first time this appeared in animation was when the multi-plane camera was invented. This was created by  “Walt Disney Studios animator/director Ub Iwerksin 1933, using parts from an old Chevrolet automobile.” according to Wikipedia.

Remediation

rrr.jpg

In book Remediation Jay David Bolter and Richard Grusin argue that new visual media achieve cultural significance by refashioning earlier media. New media define themselves in relationship to older media. Remediation operates in two directions: older media tries to appropriate and refashion digital media and digital media tries to refashion older media.

Project Idea

I wanted to incorporate the flying of the butterfly, I phenomena so casual in the spring time back in home country. I took this picture circa October 2017 and wanted to turn it in a more immersive art-piece. I symbolize my development as an artist and creative person who from a very 2-D perspective came and developed more mature skills in MA course resulting in a more immersive and impactful content like the 3-D parallax effect.

Phase 2- Project Development: Project 1 Research

Virtual Reality Scene Project

For this project, I intended to make a virtual reality scene by using a virtual reality scene creating software. The reason for VR narrative is because I wanted to get exposed to the immersive technology and experience hands-on the complications and exciting elements of virtual reality storytelling.

I had previously been  exposed to the ps4 VR gaming but I haven’t designed a virtual reality environment myself.

So for the phase 2 of the practice media 1, I choose to dive into VR environments and create content in a new untamed medium.

Virtual Reality Narratives

VR Scene Making Softwares

The software I am trying to create my scene is Unreal Engine 4 and will be using the developer kit HTC Vive headset.

Influences

Since I am furthering my concept of post-truth, a project I completed for Unit 6 and touching socio-political topics likes popularism, post-truth politics, democracy, demagogues, and trust.

I am heavily influenced by the works of 1RIC and how they touched social aspects with VR narratives.

Some important influences as well:
